Ghost Hunting for Beginners: Prepare for Your First Ghost Hunt

Stepping into the world of paranormal investigation is an exciting experience, but preparation is key to making the most of your ghost hunting for beginners journey. Whether you’re new to the field or looking to refine your approach, understanding what to bring, how to behave, and what to expect will ensure you’re ready for an unforgettable night. Follow this guide to prepare for your first ghost hunting for beginners experience like a pro.

1. Understanding the Basics of Ghost Hunting for Beginners

Firstly, before setting foot in a haunted location, it’s essential to grasp what ghost hunting for beginners involves. Unlike what you see in movies, real ghost hunting requires patience, an open mind, and a structured approach to investigating paranormal activity.

👻 Key things to remember:

  • Paranormal activity is unpredictable; not every investigation will produce results.
  • Investigations require silence and focus to pick up on subtle phenomena.
  • Respect the history and energy of the location at all times.

2. What to Wear for a Ghost Hunt

Secondly, successful ghost hunting for beginners, starts with dressing appropriately for the environment. Many haunted locations are old, unheated, and sometimes in disrepair, so wearing the right clothing can make all the difference.

  • ✔ Wear layers – Haunted venues can be cold, especially at night.
  • ✔ Sturdy footwear – Many locations have uneven floors, stairs, or outdoor areas.
  • ✔ Dark, comfortable clothing – Avoid bright colours that could reflect in photos and disrupt the investigation. Don’t wear clothing that can “rustle” and pollute any sound recordings
  • ✔ Gloves and hat (seasonal) – Keeping warm ensures you stay focused on the investigation rather than the cold.

3. Essential Equipment for Ghost Hunting for Beginners

Thirdly, while some ghost hunting teams like Haunted Houses Events provide you with ghost hunting equipment, It can also help by having your own kit ensures you can participate fully in the investigation. Here are some essential tools:

🔦 Torch (Flashlight) – Most haunted locations have minimal lighting.

🎙 Voice Recorder – Used to capture Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs) that may not be heard at the time.

📷 Camera – A digital camera or night vision camera to document anomalies.

📏 EMF Meter – Detects fluctuations in electromagnetic fields that could indicate paranormal activity.

🔹 REM Pod (a little more advanced) – Reacts to energy changes, often used to validate potential spirit interactions.

⏳ Notebook & Pen – Keeping notes of activity and personal experiences is vital for reviewing later.

4. What is the Etiquette and Conduct During a Ghost Hunt

Fourthly, respecting the venue and fellow investigators is crucial for a successful ghost hunting for beginners experience. Follow these guidelines:

  • ✔ Stay Quiet & Respectful – Unnecessary noise can disrupt evidence collection.
  • ✔ No Provoking Spirits – Respect the unknown and avoid aggressive behaviour.
  • ✔ Follow Instructions – If attending an organised event, listen to the hosts and team leaders.
  • ✔ Stay with the Group – Ghost hunts can be dark and disorienting; always stick with your team.
  • ✔ Ask Questions Respectfully – Spirits are believed to interact better when approached politely.

5. Managing Expectations: What Happens on a Paranormal Investigation?

It’s important to approach ghost hunting for beginners with an open mind. Paranormal experiences vary, and results are never guaranteed.

🔹 Common Experiences:

  • Sudden temperature drops and unexplained cold spots.
  • Unusual noises such as whistles, knocks, or footsteps.
  • Suddenly feeling like you’re being watched.
  • Noticing unexpected EMF spikes or sudden device reactions.
  • Catching any brief glimpses of shadow movement in the corners of your eyes.

🔹 Myths vs Reality:

  • 👻 Not every ghost hunt results in full apparitions.
  • 📡 Equipment readings don’t always mean paranormal activity; natural explanations should be considered first.
  • 🔮 Psychic experiences vary; not everyone will feel or see spirits.

6. After the Ghost Hunt: Reviewing Evidence and Reflecting

Once your ghost hunting for beginners experience is complete, the investigation isn’t over. Reviewing evidence and reflecting on your experience afterwards is just as important.

📂 Steps to Take After the Hunt:

  • ✔ Listen to EVP Recordings – Sounds can emerge that weren’t heard in real time.
  • ✔ Review Photos & Videos – Look for anomalies that may have been missed. furthermore, share your findings on our Community Facebook group
  • ✔ Compare Notes – Cross-check personal experiences with others in the group.
  • ✔ Stay Open-Minded – Not every odd experience is paranormal; consider rational explanations first.

In this guide, we take you behind the scenes of a real ghost hunt, from the equipment used to the chilling encounters you may witness.

Arrival and Briefing: Setting the Scene for Your Ghost Hunt

Your real ghost hunt begins with a warm welcome from the event hosts. At Haunted Houses Events, we shall always focus on making sure you feel comfortable and prepared for the night ahead. During the introduction, our professional team will guide you through the necessary health and safety procedures to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

Unlike some other events, we do not provide a historical background or ghost stories before the investigation begins. This approach allows participants to explore the location with an open mind, free from any preconceived notions. Many guests prefer to experience paranormal activity first-hand before hearing about past encounters. This method results in a more authentic and unbiased investigation.

📍 Locations include: The Skirrid Inn, Newsham Park Hospital, Pen y Lan Hall, Armley Mills, and Woodchester Mansion. Each site holds a dark history, inviting exploration.

🔦 What to Expect:

  • A full safety briefing before investigations begin.
  • A guided introduction to the ghost hunting process.
  • A chance to familiarise yourself with the ghost hunting equipment.

The Best Ghost Hunting Equipment: Tools of the Trade for a Ghost Hunt

To connect with the spirit world, investigators rely on a variety of specialist equipment. These standard tools reportedly detect unexplained activity and allow spirits to communicate in different ways, though it’s all theory, of course!

🔹 K2 Meters – Used to measure electromagnetic fields, these devices may indicate ghostly energy nearby. However, everyday electronics can trigger Equipment as well

🔹 Estes Method – A sensory deprivation experiment where a blindfolded and noise-isolated investigator listens to a spirit box for potential messages from the beyond.

🔹 REM Pods – These devices detect changes in the surrounding electromagnetic field and emit sounds and lights when something interacts with them. Many investigators use them to validate spirit activity.

🔹 Dowsing Rods & Pendulums – These traditional tools play a role in spiritual communication, and many believe they move in response to unseen forces.

🔹 Trigger Objects – Familiar items placed in a room to encourage spirit interaction. Investigators often report toys, coins, or bells moving inexplicably.

Investigative Methods: How Paranormal Activity is Recorded on a Real Ghost Hunt

No two real ghost hunts are the same, but investigators frequently report similar experiences across haunted locations.

👂 Disembodied Voices – Whispers, cries, or even full conversations heard when no one is present.

👻 Shadow Figures – People often see dark humanoid shapes moving in their peripheral vision or appearing on camera.

✋ Unexplained Touches – Many guests report feeling taps, brushes, or a sudden chill on their skin.

🔔 Objects Moving – Items shift or even get thrown without any clear explanation.

A photorealistic scene from a real ghost hunt inside a dark, abandoned mansion. A translucent Victorian-era lady ghost, dressed in a flowing gown, hovers faintly in the air, representing disembodied voices. In the background, a shadowy figure lurks in the dimly lit corner. A dusty surface displays a mysterious handprint, symbolizing unexplained touches. In the foreground, an object appears mid-air, as if being moved by an unseen force. The eerie atmosphere, swirling mist, and flickering shadows capture the chilling essence of a real ghost hunt. This haunting image aligns with the blog title, 'A Real Ghost Hunt: Behind the Scenes - What to Expect.'"

How to Make the Most of Your Real Ghost Hunt

Want to maximise your chances of experiencing paranormal activity? Follow these tips to enhance your night:

✔ Stay Open-Minded – Spirits may communicate in ways you don’t expect. Keep an open mind and be patient.

✔ Engage with the Spirits – Ask questions, furthermore, call out names, and invite interaction respectfully.

✔ Document Everything – Take notes, record audio, and capture photos to review later. Some evidence isn’t noticed until playback.

✔ Respect the Venue – Many haunted locations are historic sites, so always be mindful of the environment.

Do you ever feel like you want to explore the unknown, venture into dark and spooky places, and investigate the unexplainable? If so, you might be one of the many brave souls who are interested in the activity of ghost hunting.

Is everybody an occultist?

Short answer, no! People who go ghost hunting come from all different backgrounds. Some may be thrill-seekers looking for the next great adventure, others may have an interest in paranormal and supernatural phenomena, and others may have personal connections or experiences that have led them to explore the possibility of a supernatural world. Ghost hunting does not necessarily mean a fear of the unknown; for some, it is about trying to make sense of it.

Ghost hunters come from different age ranges and walks of life, but the most passionate of the group are often seen to have a combination of scientific and metaphysical approaches. Scientific approaches look for tangible proof of hauntings and investigate areas based on theories of psychics, mediums, and psychometric readings. The metaphysical approaches rely on emotional, spiritual, and intuitive guidance to direct their path.

The Thrill of the chase?

Ghost Hunting! But what kind of people do it? ghost hunting Haunted Houses

Whether you’re new to ghost hunting or you’ve been at it for years. It’s important to know that there’s no one right way to go about it. There are no experts in this field. The most important part is to stay open-minded, follow safety protocols, and don’t be afraid to go with the flow and let the mystery unravel itself. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll make a discovery that will be talked about for years to come.

Ghost Hunting in the 21st century

Ghost hunting has become increasingly popular in the 21st Century. Especially with the rise of reality shows that take viewers into paranormal investigation and haunted places.

There is something tantalizingly intriguing about the concept of ghosts, especially to the millennials and the younger generations. The concept of supernatural entities has been around since antiquity and with the recent explosion of interest in spiritualism. There has been an ever growing desire to explore what lies beyond our realm of existence. It can provide an exciting way to explore history, folklore, and local lore; in search of a tangible connection to something unknown and intangible.

Ghost hunting for some is about escapism

Ghost hunting is about discovering an adventure and stepping out of the realm of reality, which appeals to people who feel like their lives have become too stagnant and uneventful. It can also be seen as a challenge, as some individuals and teams strive to document paranormal

phenomena through rigorous methods. Whether it’s measuring magnetic fields or trying to capture photos and videos of ghosts and entities, ghost hunting often pushes people’s comfort levels to uncover the truth.

Our final thought!

As said, people who partake in ghost hunting can come from different walks of life, all joining together in an attempt to better understand the supernatural and the world beyond our own. It’s not only about the exploration or the paranormal element though, for many people it’s a way to be part of something bigger. There’s a great feeling that comes from working with others and exploring something unique. You can learn a lot about yourself and have a unique experience you can’t find anywhere else.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to ghost hunting. In an age where everything has become overly digital, it is the perfect outlet for individuals to embrace the physical and the supernatural. It doesn’t seem like the popularity of ghost hunting is going away any time soon.

The not so secret bunker

The not so secret bunker. One of the locations on pretty much every paranormal enthusiast’s list of places to investigate is located in the middle of no-where in Essex, and is reached by entering the front door of a non-descript run down bungalow.

Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker was constructed in 1952 to meet the threat of Cold War and originally classed as a “S.O.C.” (sector operations control) for the R.A.F. ROTOR project, but soon after its construction it evolved in a facility for civil servants and heads of state to run the country in the event of war, Region 5 Regional Seat of Government covering London, so the most likely place that the standing Prime Minister would end up if they were able to get there should the red button be pushed.

I was lucky enough to revisit the location on October 2nd 2020 – it was not my first experience of the bunker; I am fortunate to live ten miles or so away so it is probably my local as far as haunted venues are concerned – with the fabulous guys from Haunted Houses who I help out as a host.

Just think of me like Batman, as soon as I get the signal, I am on my way….

The British weather didn’t dampen our fun …

The weather was atrocious, torrential rain which had been non stop pretty much all day, and I did wonder if this was going to cause us any issues during the evening, saying that, we were going to be one hundred and twenty-five feet underground so it probably was not going to be an issue.

What was a bit strange however was the many men walking around in German WW2 costumes, after chatting to one of them we found out they had been filming a Bollywood epic, I am actually waiting for it to come out as I am totally intrigued how the Indian film giant has managed to incorporate Nazi’s into a production?

As the guests started to arrive – with temperature checks, social distancing, groups of six, hand sanitizer and all the other safety precautions that the pandemic of 2020 has caused to become normality in our lives – the most common question I was asked as a host was “if there was never any nuclear war, why is this place haunted?”

Well, that is the million-dollar question is it not? There are no obvious documented deaths (unlike its Regional sibling in the Midlands, Drakelow) and we know that thankfully the bomb was never launched, so why would a spirit choose to come back here?  That is something that I guess we will never be able to answer for sure, but would it surprise you to know that all of the Regional bunkers around the country (of which there are quite a few) would have been made operational at some point, even if it was just as an exercise. One of the nerdy things I do being a Paranormal Historian is research, and then more research on top of that, and in the Parliamentary records there is a transcript of a House of Commons meeting where the then Prime Minister, Harold McMillan talks about the “Fallex” project of September 1962 when all the Regional Bunkers were put into action and how it involved four thousand personnel. It transpires that the existence of these underground offices had been made public and many in government were concerned in the breach of confidentiality.

So that means we know of at least one occasion when the big bomb doors were shut, the machinery was switched on and those that worked there had to act as though destruction had occurred outside…and then return home without breathing a word.

Will you join us next time at the “not so secret” bunker?

When you come on a Haunted Houses event, you have the ability to utilise the equipment you want to use with the guidance of the hosts (if needed), and we certainly found in my group that laughter flowed easily when it was needed to generate energy. I do not want to tell you about all of the experiences we had as it would be good for you to book onto an investigation at the bunker yourself but the sounds of  footsteps, and not just normal footsteps, high heels click clacking on an office floor was heard by two groups independently, motion sensors and cat balls lighting up when no one is near or able to make them move in answer to conversations (oh yes, top tip, if an investigation is going quiet, just start chatting between yourselves and they will join in) and a very accurate human pendulum experiment in the main corridor being just a few of the things we had happen.

When will we see you at our amazing Secret Nuclear Bunker event?

North Wales. A land of scenic beauty, rugged coastline and picturesque countryside. This is what people generally think of when they think of North Wales.  However, there is another side to my welcoming homeland. Along its labyrinth of winding roads through the mountains and hills you can unearth its many gruesome histories, secrets and paranormal hotspots many overlook. North Wales breathes history and with that many fascinating tales of all the people who have come before us and seemingly don’t want to leave or to be forgotten.

If you want to experience this all for yourself then come with me to our first location on the haunted house’s map of haunted North Wales …

Pen-y-Lan Hall, North Wales

  • Location: Raubon, Nr Wrexham
  • Building Type: Country House
  • Date Built: 1690

Pen-y-Lan Hall sits ominously within 1000 acres of land in Raubon. Dating back to 1690, this Grade II listed Tudor-Gothic country house has more than its fair share of ghostly tales, and things that go bump in the night.

Poltergeist activity has been frequently reported, items disappear only to reappear in a completely different place some time later. Heavy footsteps have been heard stumbling down the dark corridors. Meanwhile voices chatter as if they do not care who is listening. In addition a dark and foreboding presence has been felt in the servant’s quarters. Could this be the remnants of a disgruntled ex employee? The spirits of children frequent the hall, they are often heard playing in the many rooms.

Pen Y Lan carries the reputation locally of being notoriously haunted and the image of a child was captured peering out of a window at the hall. This was documented and reported at the time by the local tabloids.  One local story also tells of a child who was reportedly saved from drowning in a lake on the ground by a mysterious dark figure who disappeared! His figure is seen at the same spot even now! Making this one of our most haunted places in North Wales.

Nant Clwyd y Dre, North Wales

  • Location: Ruthin
  • Building Type: Timber Framed Town House
  • Date Built: 1435

As we move 24 miles North West deeper into North Wales we find ourselves at Nant Clwyd y Dre Wales’ oldest dated timber town house in Ruthin.

Built in 1435 the property has changed hands many times through its history. The house was used by two surgeons in Victorian times, then an ironmonger, girls school and also as a rectory. This may be why there are a plethora of ghosts and spirits who have chosen to stay in the building.

Loud bangs are still heard in the dead of night, poltergeist activity is rife, and the most famous of spectres is the classic Lady in White who wanders aimlessly around the maze of hallways the building has to offer. With so much spirit activity that takes place at this location, it truly has earned its name as one of the most haunted places in North Wales

Ruthin Gaol, North Wales

  • Location: Ruthin
  • Building Type: County Jail
  • Date Built: 1654

You will not have to travel far to our next location. In fact , it is a five minute walk to the next street.

Another one of the Most Haunted Places in North Wales is Ruthin Goal, or Jail –  holds a dark history of torture, brutality and squalid conditions for murderers and the most revered criminals of its time. Constructed small in 1654 the original jail only consequently held 4 prisoners. By 1865 the prison had been remodelled to conform with new standards and could hold 100 prisoners.

There was only one documented execution at the prison. William Hughes was hung in 1903 for murdering  his wife.

As you can imagine in a place such as a jail there are many tormented souls still serving their time. One spirit is reported to be William Kerr who was an ex prison guard who went missing during his rounds one day without a trace. Is he trying to let people know what happened to him?

Spectres have been seen on CCTV walking in and out of cells and the echoes of a young girl called Beatrice has been seen. Cell  doors bang and tortured screams are often heard.

My personal experiences here

On a personal visit to the jail I was using my Ovilus device, which allows spirits to manipulate an in-built dictionary through their energy to communicate. I stood next to the coffin that is placed in the middle of the floor by the cells and immediately the word that presented itself was “Coffin”! The device also stated the word “release” when I exited the building. It seems the ghosts and spirits at this location are highly intelligent!

Gwrych Castle, North Wales

  • Location: Abergele
  • Building Type: Stately Home
  • Date Built: 1819

We now make our way west along the A55 you will be spoilt by the coast views to your right and the rolling hills to your left. As you near Abergele you will finally see our fourth location on our most haunted places in North Wales journey. Namely Gwrych Castle.

This paranormal hotspot is as enchanting as it is terrifying. First built between 1819 and 1825, it was originally a family bolt hole to the countesses and lords of the Dundonald family. During world war II the Government used the castle to house 200 Jewish refugees . After the war the castle left the family and subsequently then opened to the public.

Gwrych became a training venue for the English World Middleweight boxing champion Randolph Turpin in the early 1950’s. He himself had a paranormal experience whilst staying at the castle. Turpin told that a lady in a red dress was seen crying when he was walking in the garden one evening. He asked her what was the matter, however, she simply vanished! The castle has held many events such as medieval re-enactments, the famous Dragon Rally in the 70’s and movie scenes have since been filmed in the grounds.

In 1985 the castle sadly fell into neglect. The floors slowly fell through, the gardens overgrew, and the spirits were left alone. Nobody was there to hear the ghostly horse hooves treading the ground or see the dark shadows often seen.

My personal experiences here

I recall in my early ghost hunting days visiting the castle numerous times at dusk where I felt captivated as I walked the halls and out buildings. It was also on one of those occasions where Randolph Turpin’s Lady in Red made her presence known to myself and three friends I was with at the time. She walked straight out of a wall into the courtyard we were standing in!

Although it is now 14 years since this happened, I can still remember exactly what she looked like. She had a long flowing old style red dress on with a white shawl over her arms that fell down her back. The spirit had blonde curly hair and glowed as if in daylight. We stared at her transfixed for what seemed like ten minutes when our fixation was broken by a gut-wrenching scream that filled the air. On this we made our very hasty exit at this point! We were totally unaware at the time about the “Lady in Red” connected with the castle and it was only after we researched the hauntings that we realised who we had seen.

A lady fell of a horse in the grounds and sadly died. However, her wishes to be buried at the castle were not honoured. This experience is what drives me further in seeking out more evidence of the paranormal. How fortunate was I to be there at the right time so see that lady replay her steps in death as she did in life. And this is why we, as persons interested in the paranormal do what we do, right?

Penrhyn Old Hall, North Wales

  • Location: Penrhyn Bay
  • Building Type: Tavern
  • Date Built: 1500’s

Penrhyn Old Hall is tucked away in the small hamlet of Penrhyn Bay. Just at the bottom of the hill before you arrive in the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno.

It is mostly of the Tudor era owned mostly by the Pugh family. Previously, the hall was known as a hideout for Catholic priests. The fire place contains a priest hole where terrified priests used to hide from the King’s men. So it is no wonder the ghost of a monk has been seen gliding through the Baronial Hall at Penrhyn Old Hall.

Within the hall’s history it tells of a monk, William Davies, fleeing the King’s men and hiding in a cave on the Great Orme. He took with him a printing press and printed Wales’ first book. Davies was later caught, hung drawn and quartered in Beaumaris.

You will hear more about Beaumaris later on in our journey. Other ghostly figures include a boy who sprinkles salt on tables, a young girl from the Pugh family who is said to have been murdered at the hall for falling in love with a non-catholic boy and a soldier. An old lady is seen sitting by the fire place and guests feel like they are constantly being watched.

Today Penrhyn Old Hall is a restaurant and has function rooms for hire during the day. But at night it comes alive with paranormal activity not for the faint hearted.

Plas Mawr, North Wales

  • Location: Conwy
  • Building Type: Elizabethan Town House
  • Date Built: 16th Century

Conwy is a medieval coastal town filled with narrow streets, charming little shops and of course Conwy castle that towers over it all. However, in the middle of a bustling cobbled main street stands Plas Mawr an Elizabethan 16th century townhouse.

The property was built by Robert Wynn, a member of the local gentry. After 1683 Plas Mawr passed into the hands of the Mostyn family and was no longer used as a family home. It was rented out for various purposes including for use as a school, and finally as the headquarters of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art.

Reported Ghosts of Plas Mawr

Plas Mawr is extremely haunted and there is good reason why. Robert Wynn’s wives both died at the property. The first of illness and the second, Dorothy, fell down the stairs whilst carrying her new born baby. A doctor was called for to tend to the wife and baby. He was told in no uncertain terms by Robert that his wife and baby could not die and he locked the doctor in the bedroom. Unfortunately, both perished and the doctor was nowhere to be seen when the bedroom was unlocked. Many say the doctor tried to escape up the chimney and suffocated. Does the doctor haunt the bedroom?

A ghostly face is seen peering out of the bedroom door, also Robert Wynn himself is seen walking around the house, greeting people with ghostly “hello”! Elsewhere on the second floor two women spirits have been encountered, one of them seems distressed. Could this be both of Roberts two wives?

Also, poltergeists like to throw items at guests and the smell of tobacco can be smelt. Unseen hands touch unsuspecting guests without permission. The spirit of a black cat has also been seen crossing the floors.

We have come to the last location on our Haunted Houses tour of the most haunted locations in North Wales. It is located on the Isle of Anglesey, itself famed for its mythology, mystery and abundance of ghosts and phantoms.

Beaumais Gaol, North Wales

  • Location: Beaumaris, Anglesey
  • Building Type: Former Gaol & Police Station
  • Date Built: 1829

Beaumaris jail dates back to 1829. Looks can sometimes be deceiving as after its use as a prison it was used as a police station and children’s clinic.

During its time as a jail prisoners were subjected to a strict horrific regime and were often whipped, chained and isolated in a dark cell for up to three days. You can visit this very cell yourself and turn off the lights to experience how that would have felt, even just for ten minutes. Two inmates that were subjected to this torture were Williams Griffiths and Richard Rowlands who were both hung and are buried at the prison grounds. Both of their spirits haunt the jail to this day and regularly communicate with guests via the Ouija boards.

A female spirit named Bridget wanders the jail looking for her child who also perished within the walls.  A darker more mischievous energy also frequents the jail and is often seen. I, myself, have had my name whispered in my ear when alone in the jail. The condemned man’s cell is much less welcoming at night with a heavy atmosphere that would make even the most seasoned ghost hunter very uneasy. Whistling and faint moaning can be heard at the dead of night within the jails freezing halls.

The jail governor also still patrols the jail and has been seen inside his office or outside on his viewing platform looking down the halls where he had a prime view of all the prisoners…and now the living.

Stoke-on-Trent as a city was born out of the industrial revolution, and in particular it was famed for its world-class pottery. Staffordshire itself is known as “the creative county”, specifically for it’s creative industries and beautiful landscape.

Yet, what of the tales of the areas hauntings, such as its mysterious ghostly children still plying their trade, or Moorland boggets?

Staffordshire’s number one ghost hunting events company Haunted Houses Events invites you to read about some of Stoke-on-Trent’s and Staffordshire’s MOST HAUNTED buildings, locations and places – and perhaps even investigate them yourself.

Ford Green Hall

  • Location: Smallthorne, Stoke-on-Trent
  • Building Type: Timber framed farmhouse

One of our top haunted places of Staffordshire, is Ford Green Hall. The oldest building in Stoke-on-Trent.  Specifically built as a Yeomans dairy farm by Hugh Ford and his family.  The Ford Family lived at Ford Green Hall for over 200 years up until the 19th century. Whereupon, Ford Green Hall was then split into three separate cottages housing three families.

Since 2017, Haunted Houses Events has hosted ghost hunting events for the public at Ford Green Hall. Whilst to some in may be true that ghosts do not exist – Ford Green Hall can report some very strange occurrences, all that have been encountered by our guests, team and Ford Green staff.

Before we delve into the details of the human element to our spirit encounters here. It is well worth discussing the resident cat.

A house cat is seen running into a Parlour by many, on searching this cat is nowhere to be found in spite of there only being one way in, and one way out again. Is this the ghost of a cat whom comfortably lived at Ford Green Hall, who never wanted to leave?

Dark shadows have been witnessed moving in the corners of rooms, and also on stairways. Rather unsettling for many but still all to common a sight. Perhaps this is the spirit of Hugh Ford,  said to be watching closely whilst you are a guest in his home.

Watch out for flying glasses that have been reported here.

A tall and sinister man is said to roam the now decrepit upper corridors, perhaps he is now searching for his next victim. For this man with his goatee beard and sideburns was in life a known murderer of woman, known to of carried out his crimes within this very building.

The spirits of the Leopards former owners are said to be seen moving between rooms, both Landlady Mary, and following Landlord James Norris are said to remain at their once proud establishment. James is particularly known to be uppity and likes to show you his position of power.

People have reported violent encounters in the abandoned rooms of the Leopard, unseen hands at their throats said to hold them tightly against walls, a threatening action that will be sure to see you leaving in a hurry.

On a dark and remote landscape, the Staffordshire Moorlands has long-held traditions which also include a ghost story or two.

A headless horseman is one of the most popular tales, whos seen racing in the distance across the desolate landscape. Others talk about the story of the mermaid, who lures unsuspecting travellers to a watery grave at a nearby pool. While it may not be true – However, so popular is this myth a local pub the Mermaid Inn at Morridge, takes its name from the legend.

Witch Hunting!

Joshua Linnet a local witch hunter frequented the Mermaid Pool, situated close to Anzio Camp. Seeking out and questioning suspect women.

Witches were discovered with Trial by Ordeal. A rope bound the feet and hands, with a hanging rope around the waist. Also the torso had a knot a particular distance from it.

If the knot and accused both dipped beneath the surface of the water, the accused was proven innocent. The defendant was guilty If the knot was dry.  This was proof the accused was in league with the Devil. On one occasion, such a test led to a girl being drowned.

Legend says that three days later, as Linnet was passing the pool, The girls ghost reached out and dragged him in to his death. The Witches, people say, continue their macabre dance of death as ghosts around this ancient area. It is claimed that this peat stained pool is bottomless, cattle refuse to drink here and also birds never fly above it.

Anzio Army Camp

Anzio Army Camp is based in such an ancient landscape with a long cold history of death and torture. In addition the trail passing Anzio (now A53) was once littered with the hanging bodies of criminals, rotting away in gibbets on roadsides as a warning to all would be wrong doers!!

Shadow people have been reported to be lurk in the old buildings, giving the constant feeling of being watched. Haunted Houses guests have been made to feel physically ill, faint and unsteady more than once.

But what of the land? There are many sightings of supernatural dogs in the area, centring around a big black dog called a ‘boggart.’ Sightings of the spectral dogs are strongest on the moorlands of the Peak District, land that is occupied by Anzio Camp, and tales of the Kinder Boggart terrify walkers.

At any rate, it’s not hard to imagine how scared you would feel lost on the moors up there when thick fog descends and a figure on all fours is seen approaching!!

Gladstone Pottery Museum

  • Location: Longton, Stoke-on-Trent
  • Building Type: Dissued Pottery Works
  • Date Built: 1787
Haunted Places of Staffordshire
Gladstone Pottery Museum

Gladstone Pottery is situated in Longton and is a good example of a complete Victorian pottery works, furthermore it was one of the first factories to start pottery manufacturing in Stoke-on-Trent. closing in 1960

Spirit children and grown men in Victorian clothes are often seen wandering the site, possibly carrying out their duties in death as they did so in life. Is this a place haunted by it’s past? Visitors have often reported strange smells of burning, and feelings of their clothing being tugged from below. Heavy footsteps have been heard by staff, and on investigation failing to find the cause

Poltergeist activity has also made its mark here, The Doctor’s house is arguably the most active area of the site, where items have been witnessed to seemingly move – all on their own accord.

Gladstone Pottery Museum is unfortunately closed to paranormal investigators, which we feel is a very real shame.
